J.K. Rowling: Harry, I think, is very much a book character. He’s very introspective. He is the reader’s eyes onto the world; he wears the glasses. And that’s not easy to convey for I believe, for any actor, let alone an actor of 11 or 12. But what Daniel’s got, I think, is the ability to listen and react very well on-screen.
This is during the writing of The Hallows, and I said to him, “Dumbledore’s giving me a bit of trouble; I thought I’d take a break for a day and see you.”
And he said, “Yeah, but Dumbledore is dead.” And then he immediately said, “Don’t tell me! Don’t tell me!” and panicked!
Then apparently, after I left, he went back down the corridor to the other kids, since they were all still being schooled at the time, and he said, “She told me. I know what happens.” Well, then of course he was besieged and then he started to panic! And it’s just like being me. Serves him right.
